The American Theological Seminary exists
to educate persons, who will be intellectually keen and spiritually
fervent in service to Christ in strategic fields of Christian Ministry.
Strongly convinced that the Christian World needs thoroughly trained
leaders, able to lead God’s people in accordance with the
Bible, the Bible is kept at the center of the curriculum:
(1) the language courses are greatly stressed in order that the
Scripture may be studied in the original Hebrew and Greek and its
precise meaning ascertained; (2) courses in exegesis involving detailed
study of particular portions of the Bible teach careful and accurate
methods of interpretation; (3) courses in systematic theology embracing
a comprehensive, coherent theology built from Scripture determine
exactly what it teaches regarding to both past and present movements
in history and Christian Missions by gathering materials from the
Bible; (4) church history courses examine how people have interpreted
the bible through the ages and note the effects of it in human life.
Careful attention is to be devoted to the development Of the
appropriate ministry skills necessary for effectiveness in the
chosen areas of Christian service. Careful training in homiletics
and public speaking is included in every semester of the course.
The entire Seminary community is to be strictly in line with
the system of doctrine contained in the Scripture and expounded
in the historic Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms.
The desire for the worship of God, mutual edification, and evangelistic
and missionary zeal is to be
nurtured. And Christian character qualities essential for godly
living and leadership in ministry, and constant prayerfulness
are to be cultivated.
In general the Seminary wants to educate
ministers who:
- Regard ministry in the context of the church, whose Philosophy
of ministry balances principles of worship, Prayer, exposition,
edification, evangelism, and Discipleship;
- Are caring, generous, wise, discerning, happy, mature, open,
hones, disciplined, accountable, humble, purposeful, empathic,
and teachable;
- Think, write and speak well;
- Exercise good judgment in facing the trials of life and Ministry
in a contemporary context;
- Establish genuine, God-centered relationship with a wide range
of people encouraging and exhorting them according to their
need in the mutual pursuit of God;
- Are self-directed in the use of their time, energies, and
resources;
- Exercise initiative in identifying and carrying out acts of
ministry;
- Stay current on contemporary issues and address, contemporary
culture with a biblical world view and confront unbiblical religious
and philosophical thought in defending the Christian Faith;
- Share a sense of community and collegiality with
brothers in ministry.

American Seminary wants to:
- Provide ongoing resources for the life and work of the Church.
- The Seminary shows forth in the lives of its directors, faculty,
and students, an attitude of deep consecration to the things
of God, constant dependence upon prayer; and unceasing devotion
to the task of preaching the knowledge of the saving power of
Christ throughout the world.
