MISSIONARY PROGRAM
It is designed for persons of demonstrated competence who have served at least two years in ministries with a strong emphasis on intercultural or evangelistic outreach. The program combines theological and linguistic learning to provide both a textual (Biblical) and a contextual (world) basis for missiological understanding and method. This program is suitable for
field missionaries, church planters, mission executives and church leaders.

The purpose of the Missionary certificate program at American Theological Seminary is: To nurture within our Students the highest integrity in missiological theory and practice (harvitus) necessary for joyful servant leadership
under Jesus Christ in His gracious work of seeking and saving the lost (Luke 19;10)

Admission Requirements

  1. Entry into this program requires the high school diploma or its equivalent with a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  2. Applicants should have at least two years of full-time experience in cross-cultural ministry or evangelism. Exceptions may be determined by the Missionary Program committee.
  3. Applicants must submit to the Office of Certificate Program a complete Missionary Program application form which includes a $100 non-refundable application fee.
  4. A personal interview with the program supervisor will usually be required.
  5. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate a working ability in the English language by means of an acceptable TOEFL score or some other standard English examination.
 

Application Procedure
All prospective Missionary Program students should contact American Theological Seminary Certificate Program Office for the required application materials. A non-refundable $100 application fee must accompany the completed application form.

- Each course of 10 weeks $400
- 10 courses in the program (Total) $4000.00
(Classes meet two nights a week from 6:00 to 10:30 pm)
- Each units is 10 hours of class, 36 units in all equal 360 hours.

Curriculum
Students will successfully complete a minimum of 36 units of Missionary certificate course work with a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Individual courses will be regarded as successfully completed only when a grade of B- or better is received. The 36 units will have the following
structure:

Successful completion of the 12 units of the Word, 9 of which must be in one related field, either the Old Testament or the New Testament; 8 units of Doctrinal Study; 10 units of study of Missiological Research and Literature; 3 units of church history; 3 units of communication skill.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

MP 101: Read Through the Old Testament (3 units)
In this course students will analyze the contents of the Old Testament from the Book of Genesis to Esther and stress mastery of individual
personalities, events, and contents of each book.

MP 102: Read Through the New Testament (3 units)
In this course students will analyze the contents of the 27 books of the New Testament, emphasizing mastery of the facts and teachings
of each book.

MP 103: Praise and Worship I (3 units)
In this course students will learn a thorough analysis of worship based on the theological principles. Each student demonstrates his/her ability to use the theological principles learned by preparing and leading group devotion.

MP 201: Read Through the Old Testament II (3 units)
This course is a continuation class of MP 101, and students will analyze
the contents of the Old Testament from Job to Malachi, emphasizing mastery of individual personalities, events and contents of each book.

PM 202: Exposition of Acts (2 units)
This is a course designed to acquaint the student with the genesis and
Progression of early Christianity. Students will learn evangelistic
Methodologies and to the tensions and confusions with regard to that which is
Normative or commanded versus that which is transitional or occasional.
Also they will learn the chronology of key events in the life of the Apostle
Paul.

PM 203: Praise and Worship III (1 unit)
In this course students will learn worship and music ministries in the church,
including instruction in planning, song-leading, hymnology, and selection
of music for worship, evangelism, Christian education, and special services.
Requires accountability for field education and internship assignments.

MP 301: The Westminster confession of Faith I (3 units)
This course offers a historical and ecclesiastical consideration bearing on
the development of reformed doctrine.

MP 302: Communicating Workshop (2 units)
This course is designed to teach techniques of communication in personal
evangelism and teaching classes in church, giving attention to content and
delivery.

MP 303: Praise and Worship III (1 unit)
This course is the continuation of MP 203.

MP 304: Church History (3 units)
This course offers a survey of the history of the Christian Church from the Patristic to the Reformation. Attention is given to the transformation of antiquity to the Middle Ages, including the topics of the rise of Byzantium, the Teutonic invasions, the rise of Islam, and the development of early Europe. Distinctly medieval realities such as Scholasticism and the evaluation of the papal office receive emphasis. Also studied are medieval monastic, conciliar, and
reform movements.

MP 401: The Westminster Confession of Faith II (3 units)
This course is the continuation of MP 301 with the study of Small and Large Catechisms, giving emphasis on learning the rich heritage of mature Reformed Theology in its historical context and its application to our contemporary world.

MP 402: Crisis Counseling (3 units)
Students will learn in this course the concept of crisis and how to intervene creatively. The nature of crisis, its signs, development, and effects are treated.
The function of pastoral counseling as it relates to specific crisis in the lives of people.

MP 403: Praise and Worship (1 units)
This course is the continuation of PM 303.

MP 404: Missions and Evangelism (3 units)
This course is designed to be an introduction to the necessity and nature of Christian outreach. Students will examine the biblical basis for missions and evangelism, the history of Christian outreach, mission strategies and methodologies, and a mission program for the local church. Assignments include involvement in the Discipleship Evangelism outreach program of ARPC Synod (or similar approved involvement with another church).
