REQUIRED COURSES

411 Historical Theology. A study of the progress of the understanding of doctrine through the centuries, as expressed in writings of individual Christians and in church creeds. Two hours.

412 Church History I: Pre-Reformation. From the close of the Apostolic Age to the Reformation – A.D. 100-1517. The Church and Roman Empire; development of theology and dogma; the Church of the Middle Ages; doctrinal controversies and movements in religious life; the
Renaissance. Three hours.

413 Church History II: Post-Reformation. From the Reformation to the present day. The forerunners, causes, progress. Chief leaders, and effects of the Reformation; the Counter-Reformation; Pietism and the Evangelical Revival; the Roman and Protestant Churches in the nineteenth century. Three hours.

414 Modern Religious Problems. A series of lectures showing the historical growth of the religious problems of today and examination of biblical principles that apply. Two hours.

415 History and Principles of Missions. The biblical basis and conduct of missions; a systematic survey of world missionary history; the missionary imperative, unevangelized fields; the missionary problems of our day and the Lord’s return as related to missionary endeavor. Two hours.

431 American church History. Development of the ecclesiastical structure in the North American continent. Special attention to the expansion of the reformation bodies in the United States. Two hours.

 

ELECTIVE COURSES

432-438 Modern cults and isms. Lectures will be given, consisting of a brief history of the cult under consideration and an examination of its doctrines in the light of the Word of God. Exegesis is emphasized. Two hours.

434 Seventh-day Adventist.

439 The Charismatic Movement. A brief history of the movement will be given in class lectures. Its doctrines will be examined in the light of the Word of God. Exegesis emphasized. Two hours.

440 American Ecclesiology. A study of the church in the United States, including brief notes on history and more Particular information regarding the theology of the church as Developed in western culture. Particular emphasis on the Church-state doctrines and the fragmentation of the institution Under the concept of religious liberty. Two hours.

 

POSTGRADUATE COURSES

941 Roman Catholicism Today. 20th Century theology and structure of the Roman Catholic Church will be studied through representative conciliar, papal, and Episcopal statements.
Works by Rahner, Dulles, Ratzinger, Kung, Schillebeeck, and/or others will be read selectively.
Two hours.

942 Islam. A sympathetic, yet uncompromising presentation on the history and doctrines of Islam –its practices, ethics and beliefs. With a basic knowledge of Islam in place, the student
will be presented with a practical strategy to use to open a productive dialogue with Muslims.

943 Ecclesiastical Latin. Introduction and review of the basic elements of Latin grammar and syntax with readings in the Vulgate and the Latin Fathers. Special attention to Latin
as the medium for theological thought in the Middle Ages and Reformation. Open to qualified seniors. Two hours.

944 The New Consciousness. A seminar exploring current trends in American culture. Special attention will be given to the new cults and techniques based upon Eastern thought. Two hours.
